Candice Dupree Undergoes Successful Knee Surgery

July 24, 2012 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) - Phoenix Mercury News Release

PHOENIX - Phoenix Mercury forward Candice Dupree underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on her left knee today, the club has announced. The procedure was performed by Dr. Evan Lederman in Phoenix, Ariz. She will begin rehabilitation immediately and is expected to take 6-8 weeks to recover.

Dupree sustained a knee injury on June 17 in the first quarter of the game against the Tulsa Shock and the team decided on surgery during the WNBA's month-long hiatus after the knee failed to heal completely. The team's second-leading scorer (14.8 points per game) missed six consecutive games following the injury. She returned to action July 7 playing nine minutes off the bench against the Atlanta Dream before shutting it down for the final three games of the first half of the season.

The seventh-year veteran has missed nine of the Mercury's last 10 games due to the injury after missing just one game in the first six years of her career. Her missed game on June 20 snapped a streak of 151 consecutive starts, the ninth longest streak in WNBA history, which included 77 straight in a Mercury uniform, the fifth-longest streak in franchise history.

Phoenix is 4-15 on the season but has been plagued by injuries throughout the first half, primarily sustained by the club's top three players. Penny Taylor suffered a season-ending knee injury before reporting to training camp and Diana Taurasi battled a strained hip flexor that kept her out of 17 of the season's first 19 games. Collectively, the team has seen 49 missed games due to injury after recording 51 missed games in the previous four seasons combined.

The Mercury returns from the break on Thursday, August 16 when it takes on the Seattle Storm in KeyArena. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. Pacific Time. The club returns to US Airways Center on Sunday, August 19 when it hosts the San Antonio Silver Stars in an afternoon tipoff scheduled for 3 p.m.
