
Canaries lose series opener, 11-7

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (15-31) stumbled 11-7 in the series opener against the Sioux City Explorers (23-23) on Friday night.
In the top of the second inning Kevin Henry struck out and reached on a passed ball. Singles by Chris Grossman and Mike Richardson loaded the bases and J.J. Burress singled to score Henry for a 1-0 lead.
A three-run homer by Ryan Gripp in the third scored both Dan Meier and Jorge Moreno off their singles to put the X's up 4-0 over the Canaries.
The Canaries answered back in the bottom of the third when Dustin Delucchi singled and scored Chris Hall and Angelo Fermin belted a homer over the right field wall to score Delucchi, making it 4-3. Chad Hermansen followed suit with a homer of his own. Hermansen's eighth of the year tied the game, 4-4. The Birds got two more when Schmitz singled to score Abner Arroyo and Dennis Anderson, and the Canaries led 6-4.
The Explorers tied it up in the fifth. With the bases loaded, Chris Grossman singled to score Alex Llanos and Dan Meier off their singles, making it 6-6.
After singling and stealing two bases, Jorge Moreno scored on a single by Grossman to take the lead from the Canaries, 7-6.
The Explorers lead didn't last long. Anderson hit a solo homer, his fourth of the season to tie it up, 7-7.
In the eighth inning, new acquisition Dustin Kupper took the mound. After a double by Burres, Zach Pace and Alex Llanos walked to load the bases. Dan Meier singled to score Burres and a sacrifice fly by Moreno scored Pace for a 9-7 Explorers lead. The Explorers added two in the ninth for the 11-7 final.
Explorers newcomer Nate Holguin (1-0) pitched three innings for the win and Canaries newcomer Dustin Kupper (0-1) suffered the loss.
The Canaries will host the Sioux City Explorers again tomorrow night in game two of their three-game series at the Birdcage. Saturday night the Canaries Sesquicentennial Celebration is in full bloom with a ballgame, fireworks and a free Kory and the Fireflies post-game concert.
