St. Joseph Blacksnakes News Release

St. Joseph, MO - To open the final series of the first half, St. Joe (25-21) edged Pensacola (23-23), 3-2, seriously diminishing the Pelicans' chances to win the tight South Division. The win also clinched a winning record for the ‘Snakes in the 48-game first half.

St. Joe struck first with a bolt of power from Cody Nowlin. Nowlin lined his second home run of the year over the right field wall for a 1-0 lead. It was his first home run since the first week of the season.

The ‘Snakes added another in the third when Jimmy Mojica to lead off and was driven in by Scooter Jordan's single. That made it 2-0.

After the Pelicans got to within 2-1 in the fourth against starter Jesen Merle, the ‘Snakes received help in going up 3-1. An error-one of three by the Pelicans-and a passed ball allowed Denver Kitch to score on a Ben Thomas sacrifice fly in the fifth.

The pesky Pelicans again got to within one at 3-2 in the sixth, but stranded the potential tying run in scoring position three times in the sixth or after.

Merle (3-1) lasted five frames, allowing just one run, in earning his second win as a starter. Jamie Tricoglou stranded the potential tying run at third for his fifth save.

St. Joe had eight hits, with Scooter Jordan, Jake Whitesides and Jimmy Mojica each having a pair. Mark Burke, in his return to the lineup, was 0-for-3 to end his 15-game hitting streak.

Donovan Graves (4-2) starts Saturday's middle game at Phil Welch Stadium against Pensacola's Jake Vose (1-2). Game time is 7:05pm and Blacksnakes Inaugural Season Baseballs will be given away at the gates, which open at 6pm. The broadcast opens with the Heartland Health Pre-Game Show at 6:45pm at www.stjoeblacksnakes.com and at 88.9 FM at the ballpark.
