Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Sioux Falls, SD - The Canaries (9-21) lost another one-run game to the Sioux City Explorers (15-16), falling 6-5 on Tuesday night at the Birdcage.
The Explorers got on the board in the second inning. Mike Richardson singled to left field to score Kevin Henry, and an error by Chad Hermansen brought home Chris Grossman for the X's 2-0 lead.
The Canaries got one back in the bottom of the second. Abner Arroyo singled and scored on a single by Angelo Fermin, making it 2-1.
In the third inning, a single by Chad Hermansen scored Ralph Santana to tie the game. The Canaries took the lead when Fermin singled to score Arroyo for the second time, and the Birds extended their lead to 4-2 when Chris Hall singled to score Hermansen.
The X's answered right back in the fourth when a two-run homer by Ryan Gripp, his sixth home run of the season, tied up the game again, 4-4.
The Explorers took the lead again in the seventh with a solo homer by Alex Llanos, 5-4. The home run was Llanos second of the season.
In the eighth, Canaries skipper Mike Pinto disagreed with the umpire and was ejected from the game when Jorge Moreno scored on a balk, giving the X's a 6-4 lead over the Canaries. Moreno had reached on a single and advanced to third on a throwing error by Dennis Anderson.
The Canaries began the bottom of the ninth looking to rally. Dustin Delucchi walked and Ralph Santana reached on an error by centerfielder Ryan Ruiz to put two on for Dennis Anderson. Anderson hit a groundball to first base and was called out on a close tag play at the bag. Both Dennis Anderson and Rich Hyde were ejected in the ninth inning after arguing the call. A sacrifice fly by Arroyo scored Delucchi to make it 6-5, but the Canaries would leave Santana on third base to end the game one run short.
Tom LiPari (4-1) picked up the win. Peter Bauer (1-3) suffered the loss, and Sean Kramer picked up his fifth save of the season.
The Canaries will host the Explorers at the Birdcage again tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. for the final game in this series.
