Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Winnipeg, MB - The Sioux Falls Canaries scored five runs over the final two innings on Thursday night, but for the third straight game, the comeback effort fell short with the Birds losing by the final score of 8-6 at Winnipeg's Shaw Park.
Goldeyes starting pitcher Edwin Carl labored through his first four innings, but only gave up one run on four hits while leaving six men on base. The right-hander settled down in the middle innings, retiring 11 straight before giving up a solo home run to Chris Jacobs with two outs in the 8th inning.
Carl made it into the 9th inning, but left after giving up a lead-off single to Jabari Henry. Joeanthony Rivera came out of the Goldeyes' bullpen, but struggled. The left-hander gave up three runs on four hits, including a two-run double off the bat of Blake Schmit. Rivera also gave up an RBi single to Ty Morrison before being replaced by Victor Cappellan with two out in the 9th. Cappellan gave up a single to Jacobs, putting the potential tying run on base before Mike Falsetti flew out to right-field, ending the ball game.
Canaries starting pitcher Grady Wood tossed his first complete game of the season, but did so in a losing effort. The right-hander suffered his first loss of the season after allowing 8 runs (7 earned) on 12 hits while striking out four batters.
The Birds were led offensively by Schmit and Jacobs, who each finished the night going 2-for-5 with a run scored. BJ Guinn also had a two hit night, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the loss.
The Canaries return home on Friday, June 2nd when they open up a three-game series against the Kansas City T-Bones. Right-hander Troy Marks will get the start for the Birds in the series opener. Be sure to stick around after the game for the first Friday Night All-Star Fireworks Spectacular, presented by the Orthopedic Institute and Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital.
