Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

(SIOUX FALLS, SD) – The Canaries finally got their exhibition season underway on Monday, a night after having what would have been their home exhibition opener cancelled due to poor weather, dropping a 6-5 decision to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.

The Birds got off to a good start in the first inning when the game's second batter, SS Marc Mirizzi hit a solo homer to right field off of starting pitcher RHP Ryan Jamison. 3B Troy Farnsworth would extend the lead to 2-0 with an RBI single later that inning, plating 2B Felix Pagan.

The Canaries held a 2-1 lead into the third inning when the RedHawks got to LHP Jacoby Marshall, who signed with the Birds out of their open try-out less than a week ago. Fargo-Moorhead scored three runs on five hits in Marshall's only inning of work. RHP Shayn Holbrook, the third pitcher of the night for the Canaries, gave up two runs over two innings, only one of them earned, and took the loss.

RHP Matt Koziara started the game for the Canaries, pitching two innings, giving up one run. RF Will Pennyfeather was 3-5 with an RBI, while Pagan and 1B Desi Wilson each had a pair of hits for the Birds.

BIRD SEED: The Canaries will next take the field Wednesday night when they host the Lincoln Saltdogs in Yankton, SD. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. The club will open the home exhibition season Friday night at the Birdcage at 7:03 PM.

Canaries fans are invited to come to Skelly's Pub in Downtown Sioux Falls Tuesday night to kick off the "Skelly's Birdcage Express", a free transit to and from Skelly's on the evenings of home Fridays and Saturday. The party, which will last from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, will be marked by free food and drink and a chance to meet Canaries players and coaches.
