Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

Jim Essian hit a two run home run in the 11th inning to give the Ft. Worth Cats a 3-1 over the Shreveport Sports Monday night at Fair Grounds Field. The two-run home run by Essian came off Shreveport relief pitcher Lonnie Shelton (0-1).

The Sports had tied the game in the ninth when Michael Hicks singled home Tony Schifano to knot the game at a run apiece. Schifano had two hits to extend his hitting streak to five games.

Ft. Worth snapped a scoreless game when Byron Smith led off the eighth inning with a home run off Sports reliever John Parker on the first pitch by Parker.

The loss by the Sports spoiled an excellent pitching performance by Shreveport starter Ian Doiron who had a no-hitter through five innings before giving up a lead off single to Brian Moon in the sixth. Through seven innings of work the former LSU-S hurler allowed only one hit in getting a no decision.

The Sports and Ft. Worth will play the second game of the three game series Tuesday at Fair Grounds Field. Game time will be 7:05 pm.

Final again, Ft. Worth 3, Shreveport 1 (11 innings)
