Canaries beat Snakes, 7-4

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (4-4) took a 7-4 win against the St. Joe Blacksnakes (5-4) on Wednesday afternoon. The win was the second in a row for the Canaries, who will play for a series sweep on Thursday night.

Mark Burke drew a bases-loaded walk for the Blacksnakes in the first to give the his team their only lead of the game, 1-0.

Anthony Monegan doubled in the third inning and scored on a double by Chad Hermansen to tie the game, 1-1. Hermansen scored on a single by Dennis Anderson, to give the Canaries a 2-1 lead.

The Birds extended their lead with four runs in the fourth. Chris Weber singled and Jason Sugden doubled to set the table for Monegan. Monegan singled to score them both for a 4-1 lead. Monegan scored on a throwing error by Ben Thomas and Hermansen scored when John Schmitz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The additional runs gave the Canaries a 6-1 lead.

Burke hit a solo homer, his second of the year, in the sixth inning. The run brought the Blacksnakes back within four, 6-2.

In the bottom of the inning, Abner Arroyo walked and scored on a Chris Hall single to put the Canaries back up by five, 7-2.

The Blacksnakes got two more runs in the eighth and brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but the Canaries bullpen shut them down for the 7-4 final.

Doug Johnson (4-5) picked up the win allowing two runs on fo ur hits in 6.1 innings of work and Shingo Mitsumori (0-3) suffered the loss. Lenny Bays picked up his third save of the year.

The Canaries will host the St. Joe Blacksnakes again tomorrow night for the final game of their three-game series at the Birdcage. Thursday is Deal or No Deal Night featuring a playing card giveaway presented by Royal River Casino. The first 500 adults 21 and over will receive a deck of playing cards.
