Canaries' 2007 schedule ready
November 7, 2006 - American Association (AA)
Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries are pleased to announce the release of their 2007 American Association schedule.
"Now that we have an approved schedule, the fun begins," said Canaries General Manager Matt Hansen. "It is a very fair schedule in terms of travel for us and we have no lengthy home stands, either. We do start early (May 10) but at least we get to end the regular season at home on a Saturday night (August 25)."
The date to circle on the calendar is Tuesday, July 17 as the Canaries and the Birdcage host the American Association All-Star Game. "It's our 15th anniversary season and, for the first time in franchise history, we get to show our league what makes Sioux Falls and the Birdcage so special," said Hansen. "Fans can expect a great skills competition, home run derby, and of course, an amazing fireworks show. We are just beginning to put the plans together."
On the fun front, fans can expect every Friday to feature post-game fireworks and the Birds are in the initial stage of putting together a Thursday concert series. "Regardless of whether we play at home or not, we want people to know that the Birdcage is the place to come to see great live music," said Canaries Promotions Director John Kouris. "We had great success with our Tribute shows in 2006 and we already know that we will have a Van Halen/Def Leppard Tribute double bill as well as a Motley Crue tribute. Of course, fans can expect to see a bevy of great local and regional acts, too."
The Canaries schedule does have an August quirk as the Birdcage will be the host to the South Dakota Amateur Baseball Tournament August 8-19. "Every three years we get the SD Amateur Tourney", said Hansen, "and while we are playing away for twelve days the trip isn't as bad as it seems because for three of those days we commute to Sioux City."
Season tickets and mini-plan packages are currently available and group reservations are being taken for the July 17th American Association All-Star game. Call 333-0179 for more information or log on to www.canariesbaseball.com
Bird Seeds: Canaries pitcher Doug Johnson informed manager Steve Shirley of his retirement. The Canaries sent RHP Chad Scarberry to Schaumburg (Northern League) to complete the trade for outfielder Ben Van Iderstine.
