Vancouver Canadians News Release
(Avista Stadium - Spokane, WA) - Just minutes after coughing up a one-run lead, the Vancouver Canadians stormed back in the top of the 9th with a three-run outburst to stun Spokane in the season opener for both teams on Friday night.
Vancouver opened the scoring in the top of the 4th inning when 2B Deiferson Barreto smacked a two-run double that scored both DH Gabe Clark (walk) and LF Jacob Anderson (walk) to put the Canadians up 2-0.
After the Indians scored a lone run in the bottom of the 4th inning, neither offense could muster up much offense until Spokane managed a pair of runs off of Canadians reliever LHP Stuart Holmes who couldn't escape the bottom of the 8th inning setting the stage for the Indians to pull out a series opening victory in front of a crowd in excess of 7,000 fans at Avista Stadium.
However, Vancouver spoiled the party with a trio of runs off of LHP Sam Mendez who ran into trouble immediately allowing four hits including a bases clearing double off the bat of 1B Christian Williams who with the ball off the left field wall, helped the Canadians regain the lead at 5-3.
From there, RHP Jackson Lowery would come in and pitch a clean 9th inning to secure Vancouver's first victory of the 2016 season, picking up the win in the process.
With the win, Vancouver improves to 1-0 (1.000) on the young NWL season, while Spokane takes the hard luck loss falling to 0-1 (.000). These two teams renew acquaintances on Saturday night (June 18) at 6:35pm with RHP Dalton Rodriguez (0-0) meeting RHP Tyler Phillips (0-0).
Vancouver returns to Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium on Monday, June 20th at 7:05pm to open up an eight-game home stand against Everett (June 20-22) and Hillsboro (June 23-27). Monday's game is SOLD OUT, but tickets remain for the other seven games in the opening home stand of 2016.
