DANVILLE, VA- The Danville Braves opened up their three game series with the Johnson City Cardinals with a 6-4 win. Starter Mike Soroka did not give up a run until the fourth inning, as he went four innings giving up three runs on six hits and struck out three Cardinals.
The Danville Braves would jump out to the early lead, scoring one in the bottom of the second and added three more in the bottom of the third inning to lead 4-0 after three innings. In the bottom of the second inning, Braves designated hitter Jeff Campbell doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning. Braves center fielder Ronald Acuna was then hit by a pitch in the arm to put runners on first and second with no outs. Third baseman Jacob Lanning sent a two out double to right field scoring Campbell to give the D-Braves the early 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third inning for the Braves, Ray Didder would double to right field to lead off the inning and the Braves had yet another runner in scoring position early. Two batters later, Braves first baseman Austin Riley unloaded on a 2-1 fastball over the left center field wall for a two run home run to extend the D-Braves lead to 3-0. Cambpell then singled down the left field line. Braves center fielder Ronald Acuna then hit a double opposite field to right center field, advancing Campbell to third and the D-Braves had two runners in scoring position for Juan Yepez. Yepez then drove a ball to deep right field scoring Campbell on a sacrifice fly to give the Braves a 4-0 lead.
Johnson City then answered the D-Braves three run inning with one of their own in the top of the fourth inning to draw within one run. Designated hitter Allen Staton sent a bloop single into right field to lead off the inning for the Cardinals. Staton's single was followed by another single to right field, this time by Card's second baseman Eliezer Alvarez. With runners on first and second, Cardinals catcher Chris Rivera doubled into the gap in left center field scoring both runners to cut the Braves lead in half 4-2. Two batters later, right fielder Ricardo Bautista singled to center field scoring Rivera to put the Cardinals within one run.
The Cardinals would come back to tie the game in the top of the fifth inning at 4-4 as Luke Doyle would walk to lead off the inning. The walk to Doyle was followed by a single to left field by Ryan McCarvel, Doyle would advance to third. Center fielder Magneruis Sierra then tied the game at 4-4 on a sac fly to center field scoring Doyle.
Danville would take the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning off of four Braves hits. Campbell would add on to his great night at the plate as he doubled yet again, however, this time off the right field wall putting the go ahead run at second base with no outs. Jose Morel would come out to pinch run for Campbell to insure that a ball into the gap would score a run. Acuna would then ground out to the second baseman, allowing Morel to advance to third. Yepez then doubled to right field, scoring Morel and putting the Braves on top 5-4. With Jacob Lanning batting, Yepez would advance to third base on a wild pitch, putting the insurance run 90 feet away. Lanning then singled to right field scoring Yepez to extend the Braves lead to 6-4.
The Braves would turn to Dakota Dill to pitch in the top of the ninth inning to save a Danville win. Dill pitched brilliantly retiring the side in order, and striking out the first two batters of the inning before getting Doyle to pop out to Riley to end the game.
The Braves will return to action tomorrow night at 7 pm and it is a Dollar Dog Night presented by Kunzeler meats. On the mound for the D-Braves will be Daniel Cordero, and opposing him will be right hander Ramon Santos.
