Elmira Jackals News Release
Elmira, NY - The Elmira Jackals announced today that rookie forward Derek Campbell was called-up by the Binghamton Senators of the AHL and defenseman Alex Andreyev underwent more tests on his injured eye. Campbell will make his first appearance with Binghamton since attending their preseason training camp in the fall. He was recalled to fill in the spot of forward Danny Bois after he was suspended for two games by the AHL for his actions in last Sunday's game with Syracuse.
"Soupy really deserves this chance at the AHL level," said Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Todd Brost. "His work ethic here in Elmira has been outstanding." Brost went on to say that Campbell is expected to be with Binghamton for at least two games Wednesday and Friday as they play in Norfolk, VA. However there is a chance he might also play Saturday night against Hershey, making his status questionable for the Jackals road game Saturday in Danbury, CT.
The 6'1" 205 lbs Nepean, ONT native has played in 41 games for the Jackals so far this season, scoring two goals and adding twelve assists (14 points), while leading the team with 140 minutes of penalties. The 24-year old, who leads the UHL rookie class with 25 minors and is 3rd in rookie PIMs (140), played two games in his debut with Binghamton last season.
Andreyev underwent tests to his injured right eye Wednesday at Rochester General Hospital. The 6'4" 235 lbs defenseman suffered a horrific injury when a puck struck his eye in a game against the Danbury Trashers on Saturday January 22nd at the First Arena.
"The doctors are still waiting for the pressure and swelling to go down," said Coach Brost. "There is a chance that he might get his vision back, which is positive news."
The Riga, Latvia native is expected to need various surgeries to repair the damage to his lens and the broken bones around the eye.
The Jackals return to action Friday night as they host the Port Huron Beacons at the First Arena; a 7:30 pm face off, the first visit by the Beacons to Elmira since last season's UHL Eastern Conference Finals.
