Cammarata Breaks Hawks Record
April 7, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Taylor Cammarata became the Waterloo Black Hawks career assist leader Sunday afternoon during a 7-1 victory versus the Des Moines Buccaneers at Young Arena.
Two assists in the contest give Cammarata 96 during his two-season USHL stint. He surpassed Tom Bissett, who set the previous junior-era mark at 95 during his second season in the league, 1984/85. Already the league's leading scorer, the points also made Cammarata the first player to reach 90 in 2012/13.
A two-goal splurge in 18 seconds gave the Black Hawks the lead just past the five-minute mark of the first period. At 5:16, Vince Hinostroza and Cammarata turned a give-and-go into a goal when Hinostroza lifted a shot under the crossbar. Hinostroza set up the next score on the following shift as Liam Pecararo fired a low shot into the net from the left wing circle on a rush up ice. Justin Kloos capped the first period offense at 16:20, swiping the disk in his own zone and going the length of the ice for an unassisted breakaway score.
On a power play 49 seconds into the second period, Cammarata set the new franchise record for career assists, keeping a clearing attempt at the blue line before flipping it to Mike Huntebrinker in the slot for a quick shot. Des Moines recorded the only other marker in the second period, when Danny Elser knocked a chance into the net from close range at 17:48.
A Des Moines flurry in the opening minutes of the third period led to a Buccaneer power play, but the Hawks snuffed out the visitor's momentum at 3:06 when Tim Lappin split defenders to score a shorthanded goal. Kloos set up Zach Stepan for two more third period tallies: passing from behind the net to the top of the crease at 7:45, then from outside the left wing circle into the slot at 12:34.
Eamon McAdam made 23 saves for the victory. Waterloo outshot the Buccaneers 41-24.
The Black Hawks conclude the 2012/13 regular season with games against the Indiana Ice on the road next Saturday and Sunday. Information about Waterloo's first-round playoff series will be announced at a later date, after the opponent for the best-of-five set has been determined.
