Cangelosi Cashes in Twice, Phantoms Make It 3 Straight with 5-2 Win over Indy

Youngstown Phantoms News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - For the third straight game, the Youngstown Phantoms overcame a slow start to pull away in the final two periods. The Indiana Ice were the latest victims, grabbing a brief 2-1 lead midway through the second only to see the Phantoms rattle of four unanswered to capture a 5-2 victory, and close out a three-game, three-day road swing with three wins.
Austin Cangelosi led the way with a pair of goals and Tommy Davis, John Padulo and Sam Anas also found the back of the net as the Phantoms (36-25-0, 72 points) moved into third place in the USHL Eastern Conference standings, leap frogging the Muskegon Lumberjacks (31-21-10, 72 points), who were idle. Sean Romeo got the day off between the pipes, giving way to Jake Moore who was more than up to task turning away 20 shots to improve to 4-1 as a starter.
"We don't want to just limp into the playoffs," head coach Anthony Noreen said. "Our message to the guys before the weekend was that we needed to get back on the right track [after dropping three straight]. That's what we did here.
"Everybody contributed - every forward, every 'D', both goalies played great. That's what you need, especially with three games in a row in a short period."
Moore was tested early in the opening period, but answered the bell with an impressive kick save on Indiana's Bo Pieper and an even better blocker save on Lukas Laub the following shift. The Phantoms broke through at the other end with just 1:16 remaining in the first when Cangelosi redirected a point shot from Davis past Ice goaltender Anderson Snair.
The Ice (21-36-5, 47 points) came right back on the following shift and capitalizing on an odd-man rush. Tyler Pham dished it off to Laythe Jadallah, darted to the net, got the puck back and one-touched past Moore to knot it up just 30 seconds later.
Then Indiana grabbed the lead on a power play just before the midway point of the second when Patrick Newell tipped a point blast from Vince Pedrie. But Davis knotted it up for Youngstown on the man-advantage at the 13:11 mark. Kyle Connor dug a puck out of the corner and Davis walked right into it and wristed a low-lying laser just inside the near post for his sixth goal of the season.
The Phantoms were awarded another power play two minutes later and cashed in again. Anas teed up a shot from the right point and Padulo potted the rebound for his 16th goal of the season, putting Youngstown in front 3-2 with 3:35 left in the period.
"They take the lead and from that point on, I think that was the best hockey we played," Noreen said. "The power play was good for us every time they were out there. They get two big goals to get us right back in it and I think our 5-on-5 game really picked up."
Anas grabbed a goal for himself 5:47 into the third period to give Youngstown a two-goal cushion. Zach Evnacho left the puck for him in the corner and the Phantoms assistant captain walked out, stepped around a sprawling defenseman and then slotted a wrist shot just inside the far post for his third goal of the road trip and team-leading 35th of the season.
Cangelosi bookended the scoring less than three minutes later with a goal off an odd-man rush. The Boston College commit carried the puck into the zone, drifted back as Connor drove to the net and drew the attention of the defenders, and picked out the top right corner for his 20th of the season.
"Austin holds himself to such a high standard and I think he was frustrated - not with the wins, but with his individual performance over the last couple games," Noreen said. "Today there was no doubt about it. He was the best player on the ice. He was dominant, he made people around him better and he made 10-15 grade-A scoring chances himself."
