Cameron Scores 20th Goal in 3-2 Overtime Loss to Atlanta

DULUTH, GA-Rookie forward Brett Cameron scored his 20th goal of the season and the South Carolina Stingrays (38-18-6-3) collected a point in the standings for the ninth straight game, but the Atlanta Gladiators (31-27-5-2) earned a 3-2 victory in overtime Thursday evening at the Infinite Energy Arena. Atlanta forward Tyler Murovich scored the game-winning goal on a breakaway at 4:04 of the extra-session to give the Gladiators a league-leading eighth overtime win.
After the two teams came up scoreless in the first period, the Gladiators found the back of the net first in the middle frame. Forward Eric Neiley scored his sixth goal of the season at the 11:22 mark on a broken play. Forward Derek Nesbitt threw a pass behind the South Carolina goal that hit a body. The puck popped out front of the goal to Neiley on the right wing. He lifted a shot over an outstreched South Carolina netminder Vitek Vanecek to make it 1-0 Atlanta.
Cameron would tie the game on a two-on-one rush at 16:16 of the second period. Defenseman Spencer Humphries moved the puck up ice to forward Stephan Vigier. He fed a cross ice saucer pass to Cameron. The rookie was able to use his stick to knock the puck out of the air from the right wing past Atlanta netminder Matt Ginn to tie the game.
The two teams stayed tied until late in the third period. The Stingrays briefly took a 2-1 lead on a power play goal by Austin Fyten with only 5:46 to play. South Carolina defenseman Bobby Shea moved the puck to Fyten along the point. The forward walked in and snapped a shot over Ginn's shoulder for his sixth goal of the season.
Only 39 seconds later, Atlanta would tie the game on captain Derek Nesbitt's 25th goal of the season. Neiley's wrist shot from the right wing snuck through the arm of Vanecek and sat loose in the crease. Nesbitt scooped the puck into the open goal to tie the score.
In overtime, Murovich struck for his 18th goal of the season with only 56 seconds to play on a stretch pass by Nesbitt, who finished with a three-point night. Murovich raced in alone and beat Vanecek under the pad to move Atlanta to 8-5 in overtime this season.
The two teams meet again on Saturday night in Atlanta at 7:05 p.m. before they finish the season series Tuesday night in South Carolina. That evening is Ladies Night, featuring a Stingrays Happy Hour from 6-8 p.m. with $2 beers. Hot dogs are also $2 all-night long.
