Sacramento Republic FC News Release
Both Republic FC and Park Rangers struggled to find the finishing touch despite many good looks in the first half. Republic FC had a chance in the 11th minute when forward Harry Williams broke down the middle of the field and had a one-on-one with Rangers keeper Zac Lubin. Williams touched the ball around the keeper, but he was bumped by a Rangers defender as he took a shot causing the ball to skirt just wide left of the goal.
In the 20th minute the Rangers had their best look of the first half. The Rangers earned a free kick in the middle of the pitch about 25 yards from goal. Midfielder Kevin Oliveira stepped up and sent a hard shot toward goal, but it went just up and over the bar keeping the match scoreless at the break.
The second half was much like the first with chances coming for both clubs but with neither scoring any early. In the 55th minute Republic FC appeared to pull ahead when Williams played a through ball to midfielder Octavio Guzman who went one-on-one with Lubin and beat the on rushing keeper. However the goal was disallowed, as Guzman was deemed offside by the assistant referee keeping the match scoreless.
In the 71st minute the Rangers had their best look at the goal. Forward Daniel Salloi received a nicely chipped pass that sprung him one-on-one with Republic FC keeper Dominik Jakubek. Salloi rounded the on rushing keeper but was closed down by a defender causing him to cut back. Salloi then took a rocket right footed shot, but Jakubek recovered well to block the ball away and then scrambled to collect the rebound.
In the 73rd minute the Rangers broke the deadlock. Forward Mark Anthony Gonzalez fought off a couple of Republic FC defenders near the top of the box before sending the ball back and to the middle to Oliveira. The midfielder took a few touches to balance himself before unleashing a 30-yard blast that found the right side of the net to put the Rangers ahead 1-0.
Republic FC wasted no time in responding however, quickly pressing the Rangers defense looking for an equalizer. In the 76th Republic FC would find that equalizer. Danny Barrera played a deflected shot back in to the middle and Williams. The forward took the pass and sent it to substitute forward Thomas Stewart who was making a run toward goal. Stewart then played the ball back to Cameron Iwasa who was wide open on the left side of the box. Iwasa took the pass and slotted the ball under Lubin pulling the score even at 1-1.
"Normally it would feel like two points lost but I actually feel like it's a point gained because we found it hard to create open chances tonight," said Republic FC Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle. "The players showed great character to come back. We expect to win every game we play. We know we're not going to every match, so if you're not having a great night, you don't lose."
Republic FC will return to Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup play when the take on the Kitsap Pumas (PDL) on Wednesday, June 1. Kickoff is 8 p.m. at Bonney Field. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.com.
