Calgary Adds Eight Via CFL Draft

The Calgary Stampeders chose a total of eight players in Tuesday's 2022 Canadian Football League draft.

The team's picks were as follows:

Jalen Philpot 1st round - fifth overall Receiver College: Calgary Height: 6.01 Weight: 190 Born: July 26, 2000 Birthplace: Delta, BC

Philpot played 22 games over three seasons (2018-19, 2021) at the University of Calgary. He recorded 113 receptions for 1,889 yards and 10 touchdowns during his Dinos career. Philpot was a Canada West all-star in 2019 and 2021 in addition to twice being named a first-team all-Canadian. He was part of a Vanier Cup-winning team in 2019 and suited up in the College Gridiron Showcase following his senior season. Philpot attended Seaquam Secondary School in Delta and was high-school and college teammates with his twin brother, Tyson. Both siblings set Dinos records with 107-yard receptions during their time at U of C.

Josiah Schakel 2nd round - 14th overall Linebacker College: Alberta Height: 6.01 Weight: 220 Born: Jan. 19, 1999 Birthplace: Sherwood Park, AB

Through four seasons (2017-19, 2021) with the Golden Bears, Schakel tallied 145 tackles, 6.5 sacks, five forced fumbles and one interception. In 2021, he made 51.5 tackles in six games for a U Sports-best 8.6 tackles per game and added eight tackles for loss, four sacks and three forced fumbles. Schakel is a two-time academic all-Canadian and is coming off a season in which he received the President's Trophy as the Canada West Outstanding Defensive Player and the conference's Russ Jackson Student-Athlete Community Service Award. He attended Edmonton's Bev Facey Community High School where he was teammates with Calgary's 2021 draft pick Chuba Hubbard.

Demetri Royer 3rd round - 25th overall Defensive back College: Western Illinois Height: 5.11 Weight: 200 Born: Aug. 15, 1996 Birthplace: Clearwater, FL

Royer played strong safety at Western Illinois in 2019 and in 12 games for the Fighting Leathernecks, he recorded 74 tackles, five passes defended and one fumble recovery. He reached double digits in tackles in a single game on three occasions. Royer transferred to Western Illinois after attending Charleston Southern. He redshirted in 2015 and was a medical redshirt in 2016 after suffering an injury in the season-opener. In 2017, Royer played nine games for the Buccaneers and recorded 77 tackles and one forced fumble. He has Canadian citizenship through his father Christian, a former hockey player from Quebec who settled in Florida.

Jacob Butler 4th round - 34th overall Offensive lineman College: Queen's Height: 6.04 Weight: 299 Born: Sept. 14, 1999 Birthplace: Chilliwack, BC

Butler played five seasons for the Gaels and helped guide the team to an undefeated season in 2021. As a team captain in his final year, he paved the way for running back and fellow Stamps draftee Rasheed Tucker to finish second in the country with 672 rushing yards. Butler was named to the East-West Bowl last year. He majored in engineering at Queen's after attending Sardis Secondary in Chilliwack.

Joel Braden 5th round - 43rd overall Offensive lineman College: Regina Height: 6.05 Weight: 325 Born: Nov. 22, 1996 Birthplace: Regina, SK

Braden started all six games at left tackle for the University of Regina in 2021. In 2019, he suited up for all eight games and made starts at both right guard and left tackle. Braden is a two-time academic all- Canadian. Prior to joining the Rams, he played four seasons for the Regina Thunder junior team.

Rasheed Tucker 6th round - 52nd overall Running back College: Queen's Height: 5.11 Weight: 194 Born: Jan. 11, 2002 Birthplace: Ajax, ON

Tucker was a first-team Ontario University Athletics all-star and U Sports all-Canadian in 2021 with 114 carries for 687 yards and eight touchdowns for the Gaels. He added another 61 rushes for 419 yards and four scores in the post-season. Tucker majored in business at Queen's where he was a three-time U Sports academic all-Canadian. He spent his high school years at Toronto's Upper Canada College.

Shaquille St-Lot 7th round - 61st overall Defensive back College: Maine Height: 6.00 Weight: 195 Born: Birthplace: Montreal, QC

St-Lot played 20 games for Maine over the course of the 2018 and 2019 seasons, recording 31 tackles and adding one interception and two fumble recoveries. He sat out the 2021 season due to injury. Prior to joining the Black Bears, the Montreal product played at Vanier College.

Daniel Amoako 8th round - 70th overall Defensive back College: York Height: 6.01 Weight: 184 Born: Dec. 22, 1998 Birthplace: Ajax, ON

Amoako started all six games at York in 2021 and made 12.5 tackles, three pass breakups and one interception. In four seasons with the Lions, he has registered 44 tackles in 27 games. Amoako majored in financial and business economics at York. He played running back and receiver in addition to defensive back at Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School in Ajax.
