Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Slightly less than a month after breaking his seven-game losing streak, Mike Bynum has started dominating opposing hitters.
Bynum (7-10) pitched 7.2 scoreless innings Friday night to lead the Portland Beavers to their second consecutive win, a 13-0 drubbing of the Edmonton Trappers in front of 6,416 at PGE Park.
Bynum scattered four hits and fanned three as the Beavers moved to within 2.5 games of first-place Salt Lake in the Pacific Coast League's North Division.
"I was trying to be aggressive and go after their hitters," Bynum said. "They were hitting the ball but it was going at our players."
Of course, it didn't hurt that Bynum's offense gave him more than enough run support. Both Tagg Bozied and Yamid Haad hit colossal three-run home runs and the Beavers won by their largest margin of the season.
Portland (64-70) had a six-run lead until the eighth inning, when Portland's offense erupted for a seven-run rally. In addition to the two home runs, Jason Bay hit an RBI single.
The homers were two of the longest of the season. Bozied's shot hit the scoreboard in left-center field and Haad's nearly traveled onto 18th Street.
While the two longballs provided the most exciting action, Portland scored its first run of the night on an unusual play made possible by PGE Park's artificial turf.
With runners at first and second in the first inning, Bozied hit a pop fly to the right side of the infield that was dropped by second baseman Luis Figueroa. The ball took a high bounce into the stands, allowing Khalil Greene to score from second.
Because of the infield fly rule Bozied was called out on the play, but the Beavers added another first-inning run on Nady's RBI single.
Ron Chiavacci took the loss for the Trappers (65-67), allowing the Beavers' first six runs. He gave up nine hits, walked one and struck out two.
The Beavers had 15 hits, including two each by Bobby Scales, Greene, Bay, Bozied, Nady and Fernandez.
NOTES: The Beavers added pitcher Matt Bruback to the active roster Friday after he was claimed off waivers ... Bozied stole his first base of the season in the fifth inning ... since joining the Beavers Wednesday, Scales is 5-for-13, with three doubles ... Haad extended his hitting streak to six games.
