Orlando City SC News Release
Orlando City broke records left and right in 2020 on their way to their first-ever playoff game. Here's a look at some of the figures they've rewritten...
1.78 - Points per game
Orlando City's previous best for points per game came in their inaugural season in 2015, when the first-year Lions fell five points shy of the red line with a 1.29 mark. The 2020 version shattered that record, notching 1.78 points per game, good for fourth-best in the league. If you extrapolate Orlando's 1.78 per game pace over a full 34-game season, the Lions were on track to hit 61 points this season.
1.74 - Goals per game
Orlando has had good offensive teams in the past, most notably the 2016 team which scored 55 goals in 34 games, a rate of 1.62 goals per game. But Oscar Pareja's 2020 side racked up 40 goals in just 23 matches, a rate of 1.74. Chris Mueller led the way with 10 goals, becoming the sixth player in Club history to reach double figures in a single season despite having 11 fewer games to reach the mark. Rookie sensation Daryl Dike added eight goals, while Nani chipped in six and Benji Michel notched five.
1.09 - Goals allowed per game
Orlando City was largely good on the defensive end in 2019, where they set a Club record with 1.53 goals allowed per game. The 2020 team obliterated that mark, knocking it down by nearly a full third behind both their imperious center back duo of Robin Jansson and Antonio Carlos and their pressure-cooked goalkeeper Pedro "El Pulpo" Gallese. The Lions allowed more than one goal only four times in 23 games.
1.04 - Mueller on the mark
We mentioned Mueller's historic season earlier, but it's worth noting that the third-year winger smashed the Club record for goals and assists per 90 minutes. Mueller's 1.04 G+A/90 topped the previous mark held by Kaka, who had 0.87 G+A/90 in 2016. The Wisconsin product finished second in Major League Soccer in G+A/90 this season, behind only LAFC striker Bradley Wright-Phillips.
