Busy weekend at home

Brandon, Manitoba - The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings, RBC Financial Group and Hockey Canada have announced plans for the sixth annual Toonie Toss.

This year's Toonie Toss will be held during the second intermission of Friday night's game between Brandon and the visiting Saskatoon Blades at the Keystone Centre. Fans attending the game will have a chance to participate and win some great prizes from RBC Financial Group. All proceeds collected during the Toss, which will be held during the second intermission will be donated to the Brandon Youth Hockey Association.Royal Bank Financial Group is a premier sponsor of the Canadian Hockey Association.

After playing the Eastern Division leading Blades on Friday night, the Wheat Kings will close out the weekend doubleheader on Saturday night against the Central Division leading Lethbridge Hurricanes.

During Saturday's game, the Wheat Kings and Manitoba Blue Cross will recognize January's Performer of the Month - Neil Andrews of Douglas.

Heavily involved in curling in winter and baseball during the summer, Andrews is being honoured for his overall contributions during a lifetime of dedication to sports. In fact, he was recently chosen winner of the H.L. Krug Crawford Memorial Medal by the Brandon Sun as western Manitoba's Sportsman of the Year.

Andrews made his mark - as a player, coach and event organizer this past year. On the ice, he skipped his Brandon Curling Club team to the provincial senior men's championship. As an organizer, he served as chair for the 2004 Safeway Select provincial men's championship at the Keystone Centre. As for baseball, Andrews is manager of the Manitoba Senior Baseball League's Brandon Marlins.

Andrews becomes the third recipient of the Blue Cross Performer of the Month award this season, joining Elkhorn's Garth Mitchell and former Brandon University Bobcats' basketball coach Jerry Hemmings.

Entering the weekend, the second place Wheat Kings trail the front running Blades by seven points, with five games in hand.

The Wheat Kings will close out a busy weekend with the 3rd Annual Skills Day on Sunday afternoon at the Keystone. Tickets are just $2 with all of the proceeds going to the Goals for Kids campaign.
