The WHEAT KINGS will be hoping to complete a 2-game series sweep of the visiting SASKATOON BLADES Friday night at the Keystone Centre.BRANDON is coming off Wednesday's impressive 7-3 victory over the BLADES before 3,900 fans at Winnipeg's new MTS Centre.BRANDON got goals from seven different players including TIM KONSORADA and ERIC FEHR, who added two assists each.LANCE MONYCH, RYAN STONE, CODEY BURKI, JAKUB SINDEL and STEVEN LATER also scored for the WHEAT KINGS, who led 3-1 and 4-2 at the period breaks.Winners of back to back games and four of their last five, the WHEAT KINGS enter the weekend having won eight of their last nine home games to pull to within seven points of the front running BLADES, with five games in hand.BRANDON enters Friday's game with a record of 23-24-5-1, good for 52 points.The WHEAT KINGS are 6-4-0 in their last ten games.They're 14-5-1-1 at home and 9-9-4 on the road and currently have the second best overtime record in the Western Hockey League at 6-1-5.Only the VANCOUVER GIANTS have a better winning percentage in overtime this season.After losing the first three games of their season series with the BLADES, the WHEAT KINGS have won three straight to even the series.BRANDON will host the Eastern Conference leading LETHBRIDGE HURRICANES on Saturday night before leaving town for a 4-game road trip.
FEHR REGAINS SHARE OF SCORING LEAD: WASHINGTON CAPITALS' first round draft choice ERIC FEHR has moved into a tie with GILBERT BRULE of the VANCOUVER GIANTS for the WHL scoring lead with 59 points each.FEHR, who also leads the league with 39 goals and nineteen powerplay markers, has twenty goals and 32 points in his last 22 games.The 19-year old Winkler, Manitoba product, who is 3-2-5 in his last two games, is well on his way to reaching the 50-goal plateau for the second consecutive season. The last one to do so was KELLY GLOWA, who fired 59 in '81-92 before scoring 71 goals the following year.FEHR is one of three WHEAT KINGS currently among the league scoring leaders.Center RYAN STONE (17-40-57) is third while captain TIM KONSORADA is sixth with seventeen goals and 52 points.
WHO ELSE IS HOT? Former Manitoba Junior Hockey League all star STEVEN LATER has moved past CAM BARKER of MEDICINE HAT and into fourth place in scoring among defenceman with 37 points. LATER is 1-4-5 in his last two games.LANCE MONYCH has ten goals in his last 14 games.17-year old netminder TYLER PLANTE leads all WHL rookies in wins (18), shutouts (3), goals against average (2.64) and save percentage (.906).JAKUB SINDEL is 2-1-3 in his last two.
MILESTONES: LANCE MONYCH, who collected his 200th career WHL point on New Years Day, has moved into seventh place on the club's all time list for games played with 290. He's currently two behind BRETT THURSTON and ten back of RANDY PONTE entering the weekend.TIM KONSORADA will be playing his 284th WHL game Friday night, two games shy of KELLY SMART and eighth place on the WHEAT KINGS' all time list.ERIC FEHR is four games shy of 250.TYLER PLANTE'S three shutouts this season have moved him into a tie with ROBERT MCVICAR for eighth place on the club's all time list.
SPECIAL TEAMS: BRANDON'S powerplay continues to lead the league (23.6%).Penalty killing, the WHEAT KINGS are currently ranked tenth in the WHL (83.7%).RYAN STONE is second in the league with three shorthanded goals.
BRANDON BITS: The WHEAT KINGS are 13-5-0 lifetime in "home" games played in WINNIPEG (2-0-0 in regular season play). BRANDON defeated LETHBRIDGE 8-5 on November 18th 1994.Despite a 4-9-3 record, goalkeeper MIKE NICHOL has compiled a 2.92 goals against average in seventeen appearances this season.Defencemen STEVEN LATER and JON WEBB lead the club in penalty minutes with 125 and 113 respectively.Newly acquired RILEY DAY remains sidelined with a lacerated kidney while DARYL BOYLE is day to day (shoulder).Keystone Centre hosts the 3rd Annual WHEAT KINGS' SKILLS DAY Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m., with all ticket proceeds going to the WESTMAN DREAMS FOR KIDS GOALS FOR KIDS CAMPAIGN.
