Busy Week for Five as Push for Playoffs Begins & Five Announce Roster Move Ahead of Pair of Road Games
January 30, 2019 - National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada)
Sudbury Five News Release
(Greater Sudbury, ON) Having completed four of the six games on the team's longest road-trip of the season, the Sudbury Five returned home for a brief recharge before heading back on the road this weekend to face the KW Titans in back-to-back games.
The Five dropped the opening game of the road trip in Halifax, before they won their next three in Saint John, Cape Breton, and London to tie the team's longest winning streak of the season. The team's wins against the top ranked Cape Breton Highlanders and defending champion London Lightning were confidence boosters for the club noted Head Coach and General Manager Logan Stutz. "When you win those close games against strong basketball clubs like we did in Cape Breton and London, you feel like you can beat any team in this league. It's the confidence we need going into our final stretch of games."
Fans can follow the Five on the road this weekend by streaming the games live on nblclive.ca.
Five Announce Roster Moves Ahead of Pair of Road Games
Prior to the team's road games in Kitchener, the Sudbury Five have signed and activated Canadian guard Mamadou Gueye and have placed Alex Henry on the inactive reserve. Born in Quebec City, Gueye graduated from the University of Alberta in 2017 after four years with the Golden Bears program. In his final year, Mamadou averaged 15.9 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.
In 2018, Gueye won silver with Canada at the Commonwealth Games. In the semi-final against New Zealand, Gueye hit the game winning shot as time expired to send Canada to the final against Australia.
Henry, a native of San Andres Island, Columbia, will remain with the team while off the active roster.
Gueye will be in the lineup Thursday as the team travels to Kitchener for a pair of road games against the KW Titans. Both Thursday and Saturday's game will take place at the Kitchener Aud at 7:00pm. The Five will be looking to create some space between themselves and the Titans in the standings as they enter the final third of their season schedule.
The Five will return home to the Sudbury Arena next Thursday February 7th as the KW Titans
take their turn to travel north to conclude the three-game mini series between the two teams. Thursday's game will be sponsored by CollÃƨge BorÃÆ©al who will be in attendance with a special half-time game planned for lucky fans in attendance.
Tickets for next Thursday's home game are available online at thefive.ca or in person at the Sudbury Community Arena. For more information, visit the five.ca or email info@thefive.ca.
