MONCTON - In a battle of the top two defensive teams in the National Basketball League of Canada, the Moncton Magic outlasted the Saint John Riptide 91-88 on Tuesday.

The Riptide had a shot to tie it at the buzzer, but a Frank Bartley three-point attempt rattled off the rim.

T.J. Maston had another monster night for Saint John, scoring 29 points to go along with 18 rebounds. Bartley poured in 23 while Jeremiah Mordi recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 boards. Saint John falls to 7-15 with the loss while Moncton climbs to 15-7.

Corey Allmond, who started his NBLC career in Saint John, led the Magic with 27 points while Billy White added 22.

The 'Tide, who were surrendering 98 points per game heading into Tuesday's action, trailed 49-43 following a face-paced second quarter. Moncton, which gives up 97.8 points per game, led 25-22 after one quarter despite their head coach, Joe Salerno, Jr., being ejected after picking up two technical fouls.

Each team was held to 38 per cent shooting from the field. However, Moncton connected on 9-24 three-pointers while the 'Tide hit 5-24 shots from behind the arc.

Saint John is back in action on Sunday when it travels to Charlottetown, P.E.I., to take on the Island Storm in a 2 p.m. start.

The Tide will then return to Harbour Station for a pair of games - next Wednesday versus the Magic, and Friday against the Storm. Both games are 7 p.m. starts.
