Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
SAUGET, IL ¡V The Traverse City Beach Bums dropped a 9-1 decision to the Gateway Grizzlies in the finale of a three game set at GCS Ballpark on Friday night. Gateway hit five homers in the game to record the series sweep.
Traverse City grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Gateway starter Justin Lilly. Steve Young drew a one-out walk, stole second, and scored on a double off the bat of Zack Kalter.
Gateway battled back in the bottom of the first inning, chasing Beach Bums starter Weston Curles before he even recorded an out. Stephen Holdren hit a two-run homer to put the Grizzlies in front at 2-1. After Carter McQuigg reached on an error Mike Breyman hit a two-run homer to further the lead. Charlie Lisk was the last batter that Curles faced as he homered on the first pitch and Gateway led 5-1.
Mike Takashima entered in relief for the Beach Bums and threw three innings, allowing just one hit while walking one and striking out four. He was tabbed as the Beach Bums Player of the Game. Gateway connected on two more homers in the bottom of the fourth to take a 9-1 lead as Pete McEneaney allowed a two-run blast by Robbie Minor and a solo shot off the bat of Carter McQuigg. Charlie Lisk also drove in a run with a triple.
Four other relievers each threw an inning as every Traverse City reliever appeared in the game. The bullpen combined to total 10 strikeouts. Jared Locke struck out the side in the sixth, and Jeff Williams threw a 1-2-3 eighth with a pair of strikeouts. Nick Pepper and Ted Gjeldum also threw scoreless frames. Offensively, Zack Kalter managed both of Traverse City¡¦s hits in the game.
The Beach Bums (34-32) will open a three-game series at Evansville¡¦s Historic Bosse Field tomorrow night at 8:05 pm. RHP David Nathanson (9-2, 1.99) takes the ball for the Beach Bums opposite Evansville RHP Billy Phillips (0-3, 3.48). The game can be heard live on The Fox FM beginning with the Labatt Blue On Deck Show at 7:45 pm.
