SAUGET, IL- The Gateway Grizzlies homered five times Friday night in route to a 9-1 victory over the Traverse City Beach Bums and a three-game series sweep. The win came in front of the largest GCS Ballpark crowd of the year-5,929.
The Grizzlies (35-31) have now won a season-high four in a row.
Traverse City (34-32) took a 1-0 lead with a first inning run against Grizzlies starter Justin Lilly. Lilly (6-2) went seven innings allowing only the run on two hits. He struck out three for the win.
The Grizzlies took over in the bottom of the first. Stephen Holdren and Mike Breyman each hit two run homers in the inning. Charlie Lisk followed Breyman's home run with a blast of his own. The Grizzlies chased Beach Bums' starter Weston Curles who did not retire a batter. Gateway led 5-1 after one inning.
Robbie Minor hit a two-run home run and Carter McQuigg added a solo home run in the fourth to extend the Grizzlies lead to 8-1. Lisk added an RBI triple to make it 9-1.
The Grizzlies welcome the Kalamazoo Kings to GCS Ballpark for a three-game series beginning Saturday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
