
Bums earn shutout victory

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - Ryan Gehring pitched his second complete game shutout of the season, throwing over 130 pitches in Traverse City's 5-0 win over the Chillicothe Paints at Wuerfel Park on Monday night to snap a three-game losing streak.
Gehring, in his third season with the Beach Bums, tallied his 10th career win at Wuerfel Park in improving to 3-3 on the season. He walked three and struck out four while scattering five hits in the win. He is 3-1 at home in 2008 and has not allowed a run in his last 19.1 innings of work at Wuerfel Park. The shutout was the third of his career, all three have come at Wuerfel Park. He also shutout Windy City in his last home start on June 13.
The Beach Bums got started early, giving Gehring all the offense he would need with a pair of first inning runs. Mike Goetz began the inning with an infield single off of Chillicothe starter Taylor Cameron (0-1). Steve Young followed with a triple into right-center to give the Beach Bums a 1-0 lead. Young later scored on an RBI groundout by Kyle Maunus.
Traverse City added single runs in the second, third, and sixth to account for the final margin. Mike Epping doubled to begin the second and scored on a single by Brad Roblin. During the third inning Steve Young reached on a bunt single, moved to second on an error, stole third, and scored on a Jake Whitesides sacrifice fly. Epping accounted for the fifth run with his third homer of the season to chase Cameron from the game with one out in the sixth.
Steve Young, Brad Roblin, and Mike Epping each finished with a pair of hits as the Beach Bums totaled eight in the win. Epping and Young each scored twice.
The Beach Bums (18-14) close out the series with Chillicothe tomorrow night at Wuerfel Park in a 7:05 pm game. The first 500 fans through the gates will receive a Beach Bums Baseball Academy Logo Baseball. RHP David Nathanson (5-1, 2.34) gets the ball for Traverse City. He will be opposed by Chillicothe's LHP Brian Gartley (2-1, 6.25).
