Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI ¡V The Traverse City Beach Bums celebrated the 4th of July at Wuerfel Park with a 3-0 shutout win over the Midwest Sliders on Friday night in front of 6,357 fans, the second largest crowd in franchise history.
David Nathanson posted his league leading eighth victory of the season by pitching seven shutout innings. Unanimously chosen to the All-Star Game yesterday, he allowed six hits while walking none and striking out four in his eighth quality start of the season. Nathanson (8-1) worked around runners in scoring position in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings and has not pitched a game shorter than six innings this season. He was the Beach Bums Player of the Game.
The Beach Bums gave Nathanson all the support he would need in the fourth inning. Kyle Maunus connected on a one-out homer off of Midwest starter Mark Suchowiecki (1-4), blasting his sixth long ball of the season down the line in left. Suchowiecki worked into the eighth in the loss.
Traverse City tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to account for the final margin. Zack Kalter led off with a single and Jeff Brown drew a walk. Mike Goetz singled in Kalter with his first hit of the game while Kyle Maunus would add a one-out RBI single that dropped into right to score Brown.
Ted Gjeldum struck out the side in the eighth while Jeff Williams threw a 1-2-3 ninth to notch his sixth save. Williams was helped by a diving catch to end the game from third baseman Eric Newton. Kyle Maunus was the lone player to tally more than one hit in the contest for the Beach Bums, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBI. Sam Deluca had a pair of hits for the Sliders.
The Beach Bums (24-19) will host the Sliders again tomorrow night at Wuerfel Park in a 7:05 pm contest. Traverse City has not yet announced a starter, but Midwest will place RHP Chris Rubio (0-1, 4.76) on the bump for his first start of the season.
