Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums today signed RHP Steve Roberts, a true rookie out of Lafayette College. Roberts is in uniform this evening.

Roberts was a teammate of current Beach Bums hurler Ted Gjeldum until this season, helping the Leopards to their first NCAA Regional appearance in 2006. As a senior, Roberts led Lafayette with a 2.22 ERA in 2008. He served as the closer with five saves in 18 appearances. Roberts worked 28.1 innings and struck out 23 while posting a record of 1-3. Lafayette finished 25-23,

"Steve is a hard throwing right-hander with a fastball in the high 80s to low 90s," said Beach Bums Director of Baseball Operations Jason Wuerfel. "He had a terrific senior season at Lafayette and we expect him to come in and have an immediate impact on our bullpen. He could be used in either long relief or late inning situations."

To make room for Roberts on the roster, the Beach Bums parted ways with RHP J.T. King. King started eight games for the Beach Bums and was 2-5 with a 6.75 ERA. He threw 38.2 innings and struck out 13 while walking 17.

The Beach Bums (23-19) will return home tonight for a special Military Night - Welcome Home Celebration as the Midwest Sliders visit Wuerfel Park for a 7:05 pm game. RHP David Nathanson (7-1, 2.24) the league leader in wins and a unanimous choice for the All-Star Game will be on the hill as the Beach Bums wear special uniforms. LHP Mark Suchowiecki (1-3, 6.19) counters for Midwest.
