(Norfolk, VA) Joe Dillon doubled to drive home two runs in a three-run fifth, as the Bulls held on to win their season opener, 5-3 at Harbor Park on Thursday.

Dillon, who had singled to start a two-run second inning rally, doubled to left off reliever Ross Wolf with the bases full to extend Durham's advantage to 4-1. John Jaso, who drove in a pair of runs, hit a sac fly two batters later for Durham's final run.

Four Durham pitchers made it stand up, holding the Tides to just six hits. Norfolk did rally in the ninth against Dale Thayer, loading the bases with none out on a single and two walks. Thayer buckled down, allowing just a run, fanning two and giving up an RBI groundout to former Bull Joey Gathright.

Jeremy Hellickson (1-0) went the first five innings, and Joaquin Benoit and Winston Abreu followed with scoreless relief. Benoit fanned six in his two innings. Chris Tillman started and took the loss for Norfolk.

Durham collected nine hits, two from Justin Ruggiano, Hank Blalock and Dillon. Dillon and Jaso each drove in a pair of runs.

Lefty Heath Phillips will try to get the Bulls off to a 2-0 start on Friday night. He'll be opposed by righty Jake Arrieta. First pitch is at 7:15, and air time begins at 7 p.m. on 620 the Buzz.
