Bulls Win Fifth Straight
April 16, 2011 - International League (IL1)
Durham Bulls News Release
DURHAM, NC -The Durham Bulls (7-3) pitching staff was phenomenal shutting out Gwinnet (5-4) for a 1-0 win at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. This was the fifth game between the Bulls and Braves this season and all five have been either by one run or in extra innings.
Durham improved to 3-0 at the DBAP this season behind starting pitcher Alex Torres who was nearly unhittable in his second start of the season surrendering only three hits over five and a third innings while striking out eight and walking just one. Torres has not been scored on yet this year after going five innings in his last outing in a start at Gwinnett.
One night after scoring a season-high eight runs the Bulls managed only three hits against the Braves Todd Redmond and Juan Abreu. The only run of the game came in the fifth inning after Robinson Chirinos, hit a one out single through the whole at shortstop, for his second hit of the young season. Omar Luna then reached on an error by Braves shortstop Diory Hernandez. JJ Furmaniak then hit a ground ball that appeared to be a double play ball but an error by Ed Lucas allowed Chirinos to score and give the Bulls a 1-0 lead. Redmond pitched well for the Braves going seven innings and allowing only two hits and the unearned run while walking one and striking out six.
Charlie Montoyo made the call to the bullpen in the sixth and brought in Dane De La Rosa. De La Rosa finished out the sixth inning and then worked a perfect seventh to keep the Bulls in the lead. Brandon Gomes, who seems to have become the Bulls closer, worked the final two innings allowing only one hit while striking out three and walking one, to earn his third save of the season.
The Bulls have now struck out 107 hitters in ten games to lead the International League, including a current run of eight consecutive games with at least ten strikeouts. They have now won a season high five straight games.
Durham will continue their four game series with Gwinnett at 5:05 p.m. on Sunday April 17 when they will send Brian Baker (0-0 2.45) to the mound against the Braves Jacob Thompson (0-0 4.50). The game can be heard on 620 the Buzz, and tickets are still available at www.durhambulls.com
