Bulls' Mahtook Replaces Hessman in Tonight's Triple-A Home Run Derby

Durham Bulls News Release

DURHAM, NC - The International League has announced Durham Bulls outfielder Mikie Mahtook will replace injured Toledo Mud Hens slugger Mike Hessman in tonight's Triple-A Home Run Derby at the DBAP. Hessman, the IL's all-time home run leader, has been sidelined with a knee injury and will miss both the Derby and Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday.

Mikie Mahtook, 24, has been selected to three straight Midseason All-Star teams in all three seasons of his professional baseball career after earning 2012 Florida State League and 2013 Southern League Midseason honors. The 2014 Triple-A Home Run Derby will mark his first appearance in such an event though, as his eight dingers this season are just one off a career-high which he set in 2012. He began 2014 - his first season at the Triple-A level - without hitting a home run in his first 35 games, but has cracked all eight over his last 51 contests, as only nine players in the IL have more homers than the young Bulls star in that span.

The LSU alum joins fellow IL All-Star teammates Jesus Aguilar of Columbus and Matt Hague of Indianapolis in the Derby. The Pacific Coast League will counter with Reno's Mike Jacobs, Omaha's Francisco Pena, and Las Vegas' Allan Dysktra.

Gates open for the Triple-A Home Run Derby at 5:30pm tonight. The ASA Long Haul Bombers will open the event with a performance at 6:35pm.
