Bulls Fall to Bobcats 3-1
September 20, 2013 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Amarillo Bulls News Release
BLAINE, MN - The Amarillo Bulls and the Bismarck Bobcats have had three previous exciting games between the two teams. The fourth match-up and the final game of day two at the NAHL Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota lived up to that billing.
The Bulls surrendered a goal early in the third period that snapped a 1-1 tie and dropped a 3-1 decision to the Bobcats. It was Bismarck's first victory against Amarillo in three previous attempts. Both teams saw their records even up at 1-1 with still two games to come.
The game was a hard hitting affair with plenty of exciting end-to-end action. Each had their chances offensively but the goaltenders Aaron Nelson of Bismarck and Paul Berrafato of the Bulls made some big saves to keep the game tight.
After a scoreless first period where the Bulls failed to score on two power play opportunities, Omar Mullan got Amarillo on the board in the 2nd. Mullan's shot was tipped into the net by a Bobcats' player on the power play to make it 1-0. Brendan Vetter and Joe Grabowski earned assists on the play at the 9:25 mark.
Seven minutes later, Bismarck tied the game on a face off win inside Bulls territory. The Bulls had the shot advantage through 40 minutes 21-18.
Early in the third period the Bobcats took the lead when a point shot was tipped in front and eluded goaltender Berrafato to make it 2-1. The Bulls pulled their goaltender in the final minute looking for the equalizer, but it would be the Bobcats converting and scoring into the open net.
The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Bismarck Bobcats 27-26. There were seven total power plays with the Bulls going 1 for 4, while the Bobcats were 0 for 3.
It's a short turnaround for the Bulls as they play game three of the NAHL Showcase at 1:30 pm against the Kenai River Brown Bears in a first ever match-up between the two teams. The Brown Bears are 2-0 after victories over the Lone Star Brahmas and the Janesville Jets in a shootout. Fans can tune into the game live on CBS Sportsradio 1440, www.amarillobulls.com and on Pay Per View courtesy of Fast Hockey, beginning with the Wayland Baptist University Warm Up Show at 1:15 pm.
