Amarillo Bulls News Release
BLAINE, MN - Special teams were the Amarillo Bulls best friend in the first two games of the NAHL Showcase, but unkind to them in their third game. The Bulls surrendered two power play goals in a five minute span and dropped a 4-1 decision to the Kenai River Brown Bears. It's the first time at the Showcase that the Bulls have dropped two games in regulation and it sent their record to 1-2.
Tyler Gernhofer netted the lone Bulls goal in the second period via the power play. Goaltender Zac Quinn thwarted the Bulls on several scoring opportunities including some point blank chances in the final two minutes.
The Brown Bears opened up the scoring in the first 23 seconds of the game, not giving the fans enough time to get their seats warm. The Bulls were outshot 10-6 in the first period.
Early in the second, Tyler Gernhofer raced in over the blueline and fired a shot under the cross bar to beat goaltender Quinn at the 1:38 mark. Roman Amirrato and Brendan Vetter earned assists on the play. The Bulls took the play to the Brown Bears outshooting them 15-13.
Mike Davis nearly gave the Bulls the lead in the third period when he was awarded a penalty shot. Davis went in on goaltender Quinn but was stopped. Kenai River went to work in the third period to gain the lead with its first of two power play goals. About five minutes later the Brown Bears struck again to extend their advantage to 3-1. The Bulls were pressing in the final two minutes with their goaltender pulled, but couldn't get the equalizer. Kenai River rounded out the scoring with an empty net marker.
The Kenai River Brown Bears outshot the Amarillo Bulls 30-29 including 8-7 in the third period. There were 11 total power plays with the Brown Bears going 2 for 7 and the Bulls were 1 for 4.
