Bulls blast past Knights, 14-7

Durham, NC- In the first game back from a 10-game road trip, the Durham Bulls' bats exploded for 14 runs, including a Justin Ruggiano grand slam, topping the Charlotte Knights 14-7 Tuesday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. That total was the largest of the year for the Bulls as they improved to 12-6.

With the bases loaded in the first inning, Justin Ruggiano deposited Jeff Marquez's first pitch over the wall in right-center for the Bulls' first grand slam of the year, putting Durham ahead, 4-0. That was followed by a John Jaso two-run homer three batters later, giving the Bulls their highest inning run total of the season.

The Bulls added four more runs in the fifth, three more in the sixth and one more in the seventh on a total of 12 hits, including an Elliot Johnson two-run homer in the fifth, seven walks and three Charlotte errors.

Durham's starting pitcher Wade Davis picked up the win (2-0) after allowing three earned runs on three hits and three walks while striking out three in 5.1 innings pitched. He was followed by three members of the Bulls' bullpen who combined to allow five runs, four earned, on five hits while striking out four.
