Norfolk Tides News Release

The Gwinnett Braves jumped out to a 4-0 first inning lead and were never challenged in an 8-2 win over Norfolk Tuesday night at Harbor Park.

Norfolk starter Chris Waters (2-2) struggled in the first frame, as he allowed four runs on three hits and two walks. The big hit of the inning was a two-run home run off the bat of Brooks Conrad, his 4th of the season.

After the four-run first, Waters did not allow a run over the next four innings before yielding an unearned run in the 6th. The 28-year-old finished by allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits while issuing four walks with one strikeout.

The early run support was more than enough for Gwinnett starter Charlie Morton (2-1), who held the Tides to a run on five hits in five innings of work. The only run the Tides could push across against Morton came in the third frame, when Justin Christian singled and scored on a two-out single by Matt Wieters.

Wieters also drove home Norfolk's second run of the contest on a ninth inning sacrifice fly that plated Justin Turner.

Justin Christian reached base four times for Norfolk, singling twice and walking twice. Oscar Salazar also doubled to lead off the 8th inning, extending his hitting streak to 14 games.

Norfolk entered the contest leading the IL with a .987 fielding percentage but committed three errors in the game.

The Tides (11-6) will wrap up their season-opening homestand Wednesday night with a 7:15 contest against Gwinnett. Rich Hill is slated to make a major league rehab start for the Tides against Braves right-hander Todd Redmond (0-1, 3.86).
