Bulls Belt Three Homers, Beat Buffalo 9-2

(Buffalo, NY) Durham hit three homers to back the solid pitching of Jeremy Hellickson (4-0) on Wednesday in a 9-2 win at Buffalo. Durham, a league-best 15-6, is 1-1 on an eight-game road trip.

Durham, hitless over the first two innings, took a 1-0 lead in the third on Chris Richard's fourth homer of the season. a blast off Toby Stoner (0-3). Angel Chavez homered to left in the fifth for a 2-0 lead and Rashad Eldridge pulled one to right one inning later for a 3-0 advantage. Justin Ruggiano and Hank Blalock pushed the lead to four with back-to-back doubles.

Hellickson, who hadn't allowed a runner past second in the first five innings, hit his limit in the sixth, allowing hits to three of the first four batters. Mike Ekstrom, just optioned from Tampa Bay, allowed an RBI hit to Chris Carter, but retired his next five hitters to keep the Bisons at bay.

Durham then put the game away with two in the eighth, and three in the ninth. The Bulls collected 10 hits and took advantage of seven walks by three Bisons pitchers. Ruggiano, who has a 14-game hit streak, was 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Eldridge scored three times too, and Blalock and Dan Johnson each drove in three runs.

Four Durham pitchers scattered nine hits and walked only one. The Bulls play game three of four against Buffalo (11-9) on Thursday at 6:05. LHP Heath Phillips starts against knuckleballer R.A. Dickey. Coverage on 620 the Buzz begins at 5:50.
