Chiefs Snap Two-Game Skid, Beat Toledo 5-3

Toledo, Ohio - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, beat the Toledo Mud Hens 5-3 on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field. Chase Lambin hit his fifth home run of the season and picked up two RBI to lead Syracuse in the winning effort. Chiefs starter Chuck James got the win.

James (2-0) threw five innings giving up three runs on four hits and striking out four. He walked none. He allowed three runs in the first inning when Toledo's Casper Wells his a three run shot with one out. It was the second home run for Wells in as many days. Over the next four innings though, James just two batters over the minimum.

Doug Slaten pitched in relief allowing just one base runner in two innings and extending his scoreless streak to 12 2/3 innings. Atahualpa Severino pitched one inning of scoreless relief and Joel Peralta pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save of the season.

The Chiefs (13-7) got their first run off the bat off Lambin in the first when he hit a solo home run. Syracuse would score again in the second on a Mike Morse RBI single. Seth Bynum had a sacrifice fly in the third to tie the game at three. In the fourth, Josh Whitesell hit a solo home run to put the Chiefs in the lead for good making it 4-3. The Chiefs added one insurance run in the eighth on an RBI single by Lambin.

Toledo (12-9) starter Ryan Ketchner pitched five innings yielding three runs on four hits and struck out four. Josh Rainwater (1-1) took the loss in relief pitching two innings and giving up the go ahead run on the Whitsell home run in the sixth.

The Chiefs play game three of their series with Toledo on Thursday. The scheduled starters are Jeff Mandel (no record) for Syracuse and Phil Dumatrait (1-1, 4.66) for Toledo. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
