Amarillo Bulls News Release

FRISCO, TX - Five-on-five hockey was the key to success for the Amarillo Bulls on Thursday night at Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco, TX.

The Bulls scored four goals at even strength to beat the Texas Tornado 5-2 and move to within one point of second place Topeka RoadRunners. Amarillo and the Tornado will conclude their two-game series tomorrow night before the Bulls return home for a game on Saturday night.

The Tornado scored their lone goals on the power play during the contest, but was shut down by the Bulls defensively when they were at full strength.

"I thought we had great performance by everyone as it was a good road win," said Bulls Head Coach Dennis Williams. "We're really short staffed and I thought it was a good game by Tyler Gernhofer and Carter Penzien and James Bonaguro. They stepped up and played a lot of minutes.

"It's a win that we can build off of heading into tomorrow and try to get the four points. There are some areas that we need to clean up that we will address with our team."

Specialty teams dominated the first period and the Bulls were forced to kill off three straight penalties. The Tornado nabbed the first goal on their third power play chance. Less than two minutes later, the Bulls erased that when Tyler Rostenkowski pushed the puck across the goal line during a scramble in front of the net. Matt Sieckhaus and Michael Davis earned assists on the goal. The Bulls were outshot by Texas 10-9 in the first period.

The Bulls netted the lone goal in the second period when Carter Penzien scored his first NAHL marker. The Tennessee native deflected home a shot from Tyler Rostenkowski at the 2:22 mark. Amarillo outshot the Tornado 10-8 in the middle stanza.

The third period was all Bulls as they controlled much of the play out shooting the Tornado 14-5 at one point. Amarillo netted two goals in the third period that broke open at close 2-1 contest. Brandon Flood scored on a power play from a sharp angle. James LaDouce set up the play at 4:19. Later, Tyler Gernhofer got his second in as many games when he fired the puck up high. James Bonaguro collected an assist on the marker.

After Texas scored on a power play to trim the deficit to 4-2, Brandon Flood fired his second of the game into an empty net to round out the scoring.

The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Texas Tornado 35-28 including 16-10 in the third period. The Bulls were 1 for 4 on the power play while the Tornado was 2 for 6.
