Michigan Warriors News Release
FLINT - The United Way of Genesee County and the North American Hockey League's Michigan Warriors are teaming up to celebrate Black Friday and raise funds to help residents of Genesee County.
Proceeds from tickets sales for Warriors home games against the Janesville (Wisconsin) Jets on Friday, Nov. 23, and Saturday, Nov. 24, will go to support programs funded by the local United Way.
"This is an opportunity to work with great group of young hockey players, who give it all on the ice but are equally eager to help children, adults and seniors in our communities," said Jerry Leman, interim director of the United Way of Genesee County.
To generate interest in the games and support for the Flint area, the Warriors and the United Way will conduct silent auctions Friday and Saturday nights. On Saturday, Flint's Olympic gold medal boxer Claressa Shields will pose for photos and sign autographs between 6 and 6:50 p.m. She will then drop the puck for the start of the game.
In addition to the silent auction, a live auction will be conducted after Saturday's game, during which special black Warriors/United Way jerseys worn during the two games will be auctioned off to raise funds for the United Way.
An open skate with the Warriors is also scheduled after the game.
Warriors games are at Perani Arena. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the games start at 7 p.m. Ticket prices are $7 each, with proceeds going to the United Way, Leman said. Tickets may be ordered by calling 810-762-5823.
"The Michigan Warriors are proud to team with the United Way of Genesee County in encouraging people to support programs that help the homeless, the abused and unemployed," said Jeremy Torrey with the Warriors. "Whether we are on or off the ice, we understand the importance of being Hometown Heroes and helping those in need."
The United Way of Genesee County has set a goal of $2.9 million for the 2012 campaign. Funds raised by the campaign will go to support programs serving more than 35,000 residents of Genesee County.
