Bullpen Shines in Win

Lancaster Stormers News Release

It took five relievers to get the job done, but the Barnstormers bullpen came to the forefront on Tuesday evening, pitching the Lancaster Barnstormers to a 9-5 win over the Long Island Ducks at Citibank Park.

The quintet worked 6 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Zack Parker as Lancaster improved to 3-2 in the second half and picked up a game on the first place York Revolution.

Parker and Jake Dittler were marvelous for the first two innings, but neither pitched past the third. Lancaster built a 4-0 lead off Dittler in the top of the inning. Lloyd Turner beat out an infield single to second base, and Michael Woods followed with a bunt single up the third base line. Matt Watson walked to load the bases.

Dittler survived L.J. Biernbaum, striking out the Lancaster designated hitter. Aaron Herr got to him for a two-run single to center, and Jed Morris followed with a double belted off the top of the right field wall for a 4-0 lead.

Parker struck out Estee Harris to start the third, his seventh straight out. Then, it all came unglued. He walked catcher Luis Taveras. Juan Francia scratched out a hit on a dribbler up the first base line. A walk to Lew Ford loaded the bases. Matt Cavagnaro stroked a double into the left field corner, scoring two. Parker issued another walk to Ray Navarrete, reloading the bags which were then cleared by Preston Wilson's long double to left center as Long Island grabbed a 5-4 advantage before Juan Ovalles got the Barnstormers out of the inning.

The Barnstormers assumed control in the fourth against reliever Robert Paulk (1-4). Turner was hit by a pitch with one out and moved to second on a single to left by Woods. Two wild pitches later, the game was tied. Watson followed with a booming triple over Ford's head in dead center field, driving home Woods to put the Barnstormers ahead to stay.

Ovalles (2-4) worked 2 2/3 innings of one-hit relief to earn the win. Neal Musser worked one perfect inning, and Nick Abel gave Lancaster two hitless frames with two walks and three strikeouts to preserve the lead. Meanwhile, two two-out RBI hits by Michael Campbell off tough lefties Ron Flores and Jason Norderum extended the lead.

Lancaster, which has lost two ninth inning leads in the last 10 days, got a scare in the ninth. Francia led off with a bunt single against Eddie Camacho, the first Long Island hit since the fourth. The lefty walked Lew Ford before retiring the next two batters. Manager Von Hayes went to Antonio Alfonseca in a save situation. He fell behind Preston Wilson, 2-0, before roaring back with three straight strikes to earn his third save.

The Barnstormers play two more on Long Island before returning home to face the York Revolution for Friday's Ag Dairy Night. Fireworks will follow the game. Tickets are available at www.lancasterbarnstormers.com.

NOTES: With the win, the Barnstormers clinched a winning road trip...The club is now 6-3 on the trek...There were 15 walks, 20 strikeouts, three hit batters and six wild pitches in the game...Ducks first baseman Vic Rodriguez lost a 19-game hitting streak, the longest active streak in the league...RHP Jason Scobie (4-4) will pitch against lefty Randy Leek (5-6) on Wednesday evening at 7:05.
