Bullpen Not Able to Close it Out

July 25, 2007 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Reno Silver Sox News Release

The Reno Silver Sox offense did its job tonight and got the Silver Sox the lead, but the bullpen just couldn't find its groove letting the Scorpions come back for the win, 9 - 8.

The Silver Sox offense stayed as hot as it did in Chico as several Silver Sox players got multiple hits. 1B Mike Done hit his third homerun in as many games, more than doubling what he had in the first half of the season. Done finished the night going 3-5 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

Also, 2B Maurice Cole stayed on fire hitting two doubles. Cole finished going 2-5 with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored. LF Kane Simmons hit his GBL leading 10th homerun in the sixth inning tonight. Simmons finished going 2-3 with 1 RBI, 2 runs scored, and one intentional walk.

However, it wasn't the offense that struggled tonight, but the bullpen. Silver Sox starter Shawn Balteff, making his first start of the season, pitched six strong innings for the Silver Sox, only giving up four runs. Balteff left the game with a 7 - 4, however, that lead would slowly disappear.

Silver Sox reliever Jason Martinez couldn't seem to find his spots as he walked the first two batters he faced. Martinez let one run score and would leave the game with runners at second and third, while onlu recording one out. Sent in to stop the damage was Adam Nikolic. Nikolic came in and got the job done in the seventh, allowing one run to score on a groundout, before he was able to end the inning on a groundout to 3B Carlos Madrid.

Going into the eighth with a 8 - 6 lead, things were looking good for the Silver Sox to hand the Scorpions their first loss of the season, however that sentiment was felt too soon. Nikolic wasn't able to hold off the Scorpions onslaught in the eighth and allowed three runs to score while only recording one out before he was relieved by Eric Thomas. Thomas was able to record the last two outs, but the damage was done. The Scorpions got control of the lead 9 - 8, and as it turns out they also got the ball game.

The Silver Sox return to Peccole Park tomorrow night to take on the Yuma Scorpions in game two of this three game series. Tomorrow night, is also Mini-Bat night presented by the U.S. Border Patrol. The first 500 fans through tomorrow night's game will receive a free mini-bat courtesy of the U.S. Border Patrol. GBL Spalding Player of the Week Awards go to Reno OF and Orange County Pitcher

(Dublin, CA. July 2, 2007) The Golden Baseball League announced OF Juan Senreiso of the Reno Silver Sox and LHP Ben Fox of the Orange County Flyers have been named Player and Pitcher of Week Six. Sponsored by Spalding Baseball, these weekly awards recognize the most outstanding position player and pitcher in the league each week.

Juan Senreiso, 25, the Reno Silver Sox outfielder, was selected as Player of the Week. Senreiso was acquired from the Laredo Broncos of the United League in late June and has been an offensive force ever since joining the team. He takes this week's honors as the GBL's top position player as he batted at a .519 clip and led the league in hits with 14, in RBIs with 9, and stolen bases with 5 while having the second most runs scored with 8. Originally signed by the Texas Rangers as an 18 year-old he spent seven seasons in the Rangers' and Royals' farm systems, advancing three times to Double-A before being released last season

Ben Fox, 26, the left-handed starting pitcher and pitching coach for the Orange County Flyers, has been selected as Pitcher of the Week. Fox was the ace of the Flyers staff in 2005 and fulfilled the same role for the Lincoln Salt Dogs of the Northern League last year.

Deciding to hang up the cleats after last season and then coming out of retirement just two weeks ago, he posted a record of 2-0 with a 1.13 E.R.A. as he pitched 16 innings in two starts while leading the league in strikeouts with 19 and only walking 3 last week. His two wins included a complete game with 10 strikeouts over the powerful Long Beach Armada followed up by seven innings of one-hit pitching as he defeated the St. George Roadrunners five days later.

Originally drafted in the 10th round by the San Diego Padres, he was used as a reliever the first three years of his pro career before the Flyers moved him into the starting rotation in 2005 and he has gone 24-7 ever since.
