Chico Outlaws News Release

CHICO, CA - Orange County left-hander Daniel Arizmendi, making his first start of the year, scattered five hits over six innings and the Flyers scored early and often to down the Chico Outlaws 7-2 in the opener of a three-game series Tuesday night at Nettleton Stadium...the Flyers winning their third straight and snapping a 13-game road losing streak in the process.

Chico's John Jefferson, making just his second start of the year, could not duplicate his effective outing last week against Reno, going just four innings and surrendering all seven Flyers runs. Orange County got on the board in the 2nd, batting around and scoring four times - Dave Bacani's bases-loaded single knocked in Johnny Coit with the first run of the game...Buddy Morales then came home when Outlaws third baseman Scott Dragicevich bobbled a grounder off the bat of Bret Levier. Scott Goodman followed with a single to right, plating Bacani and Aaron Davis to give the Flyers the early 4-0 lead. The Outlaws had a couple of scoring opportunities early on, but Arizmendi pitched his way out of trouble and settled into a groove, retiring 10 Chico batters in a row at one point - six via strikeout.

Orange County struck again with three runs off Jefferson in the 4th - Davis led off the inning with a double and went to third on a bunt single by Bacani. Levier then sent a sinking liner to left - Steve Boggs tried to make a diving catch, but the ball got by him and went all the way to the wall...Davis and Bacani scored and Levier ended up at third with a triple. Goodman then delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Levier to put the Flyers up 7-0. That would be all Orange County would score, as Jake McLintock, John Segovia and Jesse Oster came out of the Outlaws bullpen to combine for five scoreless innings of relief...but Chico's offense was stymied by Arizmendi and reliever Ezequiel Ruvalcaba. The Outlaws averted the shutout in the bottom of the 9th when Eric Pringle smacked a two-out, two-run double off Flyers reliever Robert Salini to knock in Jake Ferris and Jason Matteucci...but any hopes of a dramatic comeback were dashed when Coit made a diving catch of Boggs' slicing liner to left field to end the game.

Arizmendi (1-2) finished with nine strikeouts to earn the victory...Jefferson (3-1) took the loss. Orange County has 12 hits on the night - Bacani and Morales had three hits while Goodman and Levier contributed three RBI...Chico was held to just eight hits, with Matteucci finishing with a 2-for-3 performance. Tuesday's loss dropped the Outlaws to 2-4 and into fifth place in the Golden Baseball League's second half standings; overall, Chico dipped to 27-17 for the season...the Flyers moved into fourth place with a 3-4 second half record while improving to 22-23 overall on the year. Game two of the series is set for Wednesday, with right-hander Jake McKinley (2-2) getting the start for the Outlaws...Orange County will counter with righty Nate Holguin (1-2). Game time is 7:05pm...listen to all the action with "The Voice" of the Outlaws, Rory Miller, on the internet or on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN Radio.
