Bullpen Allows for Late Comeback

Thanks to four and two-third innings scoreless from the bullpen the Calgary Vipers defeated the Edmonton Capitals 10-8 in comeback fashion before 2133 fans at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. Down 8-5 in the bottom of the fifth inning Calgary's pen went to work and allowed for the offense to score five runs in the final three innings for the victory. In total the relievers allowed only one hit, no runs, and at one point retired 12 straight Capitals. With the win the Vipers improve to 10-2 on the second half and remain in first place in the North Division. Overall the Snakes are 33-22 on the Golden Baseball League season.

In the fifth frame the bullpen work got started by Joe Sergent who threw a scoreless two-thirds of an inning. Scott Watson followed and was sensational going six-up, six-down in his two innings of work while Jorge Vasquez (2-0) got the win after getting a one-two-three eighth inning and Claudio Galva (12) recorded his league leading 12th save with a hitless ninth frame.

Edmonton took a big lead early at 4-0 in the bottom of the first inning as Ryan Stevenson and Enrique Cruz singled followed by a Larry Bigbie two-run double, Tom Collaro collected a run batted in with a base hit, and Josh Tarnow hit a sacrifice fly to cap the four-run frame.

Calgary cut the lead in half at 4-2 in the next half inning when Drew Miller was hit by a pitch, Caonabo Cosme walked to extend his on-base streak to 23 games, a groundout moved the runners into scoring position, Miller scored on a wild pitch, and Jorge Mejia drove in a run with a single.

The Capitals got another run in the bottom of the second as Stevenson singled, Bigbie walked, and Cliff Brumbaugh collected a RBI base knock for a 5-2 lead.

Edmonton went back ahead by four runs at 6-2 in the fourth frame when Cruz reached on an error, Bigbie singled, and Cruz scored when Collaro also reached on a fielding error.

The Vipers closed the gap in the next half inning as with two outs Jonny Kaplan walked, stole second, scored on a Guillermo Reyes RBI single, Brent Metheny followed with a base hit, and Julio Ramirez drove in two with a double for a 6-5 score.

The scoring continued in the bottom of the fifth when the Capitals' Alex Prieto and Josh Tarnow hit back-to-back doubles and Alex Chavez plated a run with a single for a 8-5 advantage.

Calgary scored a run in the seventh frame as Ramirez reached on a strikeout and wild pitch, Miller singled, and Cosme cashed Ramirez with a RBI groundout for a 8-6 game.

The Vipers tied the game at 8-8 in the eighth when Mejia singled and Reyes hit a two-run homer for his third long ball of the season.

In the top of the ninth inning Calgary took their first lead of the game at 10-8 as Ramirez singled, Cosme collected a base hit, Ramirez scored on a throwing error, and Luis Taveras cashed Comse with a base knock.

Calgary concludes a two-game series in Edmonton against the Capitals at Telus Field on Thursday July 29th at 7:00 PM MDT.

The Vipers return home to Calgary and Foothills Stadium for a three-game series with the first half champion Chico Outlaws and female knuckleballer Eri Yoshida on Friday July 30th at 7:05 PM for Girls Night, Saturday July 31st at 1:35 PM for Protect and Serve Day, and Sunday August 1st at 1:35 PM for 9 Inning Giveaway Day.
