Hamilton Bulldogs News Release
Toronto, ON - The Hamilton Bulldogs earned their first shootout victory of the season 2-1 over the Toronto Marlies at Ricoh Coliseum. Marc Denis made a total of 30 saves and stopped three of five shooters in the shootout to lead the Bulldogs to the win.
Through 40 minutes both teams were unable to earn a tally for their clubs as both Hamilton starting goaltender Marc Denis and Toronto starting goaltender Justin Pogge stopped all shots they faced. The Bulldogs kept pressure on Pogge, almost scoring when Matt D'Agostini gained a partial breakaway and tried to beat Pogge through the five-hole but was denied. Denis faced the Marlies' power-play unit six times in the two stanzas but Toronto was unable to score after peppering Denis with a total of 23 shots through the first two periods.
David Desharnais scored the first goal of the game at 7:16 of the final frame. Ryan Flinn sent a pass to Desharnais who circled out from the right side boards and released a shot towards the net. The puck travelled through traffic in front of the net before squeezing through the pads of Pogge to give Hamilton a 1-0 lead.
The Marlies tied the game 1-1 while on the power play at 12:46 of the third stanza. Tim Stapleton held the puck at the point before faking a shot on net and feeding a pass to Jeremy Williams who was posted at left side boards. Williams blasted a shot that deflected off a Bulldogs defencemen's stick and through the legs of Denis.
Hamilton gained a two-man advantage for 1:38 late in the third period but were unable to score. Pogge was faced with multiple shots but stopped each one to keep the score tied and send the game into extra minutes.
With nothing being solved in the extra period, the teams headed to a shootout. Tim Stapleton scored first for Toronto while Yanick Lehoux potted a goal in the second round. Denies denied Jiri Tlusty before Brent Aubin beat the netminder in the third round. Mike Glumac scored to tie the shootout goals at two in the fourth round. Denis denied the final two shooters for the Marlies while Max Pacioretty scored for the Bulldogs in the fifth round to win the first shootout game of the season for the âDogs.
