Bucks Stung by Bees in Shoot-Out

LAREDO, TX: The Laredo Bucks, of the Central Hockey League, lost 3-2 in a shoot-out to the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees Thursday night.

The Laredo Bucks and Killer Bees picked up their rivalry right where they left off last season. The Bees came out ready to play as the puck dropped in the State Farm Arena, but goaltender Ryan Rondeau made several key saves, to keep the score 0-0, while the young Bucks adjusted to their first time in the hive. Brandon Kosolofsky notched the first goal of the night at the 16:11 mark of the first period. Chris Jones had the assist on the goal.

The Bucks and the Bees continued to battle in the second period. At the 8:14 mark in the second period the Killer Bees evened the score at 1-1 with a goal from Dave Labreque, assisted by Marc-Andre Carre and Travis Eggum.

Nick Gigone relieved Ryan Rondeau at the 10:40 mark of the second period. Rondeau faced 22 shots and made 21 saves while in net.

The teams continued to attack one another into the third period. The Bees were able to score a short-handed breakaway goal by Brandon Campos at the 13:24 mark in the period, putting the Bees up 2-1. A little over two minutes later the Bucks would tie up the game again when forward Ryan Sparling was awarded a penalty shot after being tripped up during a breakaway.

The game remained tied throughout the remainder of the third. Goaltender Nick Gigone made several key saves during the period to keep the game tied. Late in the third, Laredo failed to capitalize on a 4 minute double minor by Killer Bee Nicolas Riox, forcing them to go into overtime.

The Bucks and Bees remained deadlocked after the extra time and went into a shoot-out. The game was decided in the 8th round of the shoot-out when Travis Eggum sent the puck over the left should of Gigone giving the Bees the win.

The Bucks will battle the Bees again on Friday night in Laredo. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:30pm, at the Laredo Energy Arena. All tickets, including season ticket holder seats, are ONLY $5. All proceeds from ticket sales will go to the United Way benefitting the South Texas Food Bank. The Bucks are also asking fans to bring a non-perishable food items to the game that will also be donated to the South Texas Food Bank.
