Laredo Bucks News Release
HIDALGO, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League fell to the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 6-3 Tuesday night at the Dodge Arena. The Bucks lost their second straight game to fall to 19-10-3 (41pts). Laredo is now four points behind Texas in the Southeast Division (45 to 41).
Laredo is now just 1-4-2 in their last seven games, and are winless in their last seven road games going 0-4-3.
The Killer Bees were all over the Bucks in the first period as they took a 3-0 lead, which included two-power-play tallies.
Rio's Jesse Bennefield picked up a loose puck in the Laredo zone, and flipped it past Ryan Gibb from the left circle just 1:09 into the game. The goal was Bennefield's team-leading 17th of the year.
The Bucks have given up the first goal in seven of their last eight games.
The Bees would increase their lead to 2-0 four minutes later, as Brian Bicek streaked down the right side on the power-play and slipped a shot past Gibb.
Rio would make it 3-0 as they scored their second power-play goal of the period, with 8:33 left in the first. Aaron Lee jammed the puck in right underneath Gibb's pads to score his seventh of the year.
The Bucks entered the game with the number-one ranked penalty kill in the league.
Laredo was outshot in the first 20 minutes 13-6.
Rio would score two straight to start the second period and take a 5-0 lead.
Evan Rankin knocked home both of the Killer Bee's second period tallies, at 2:28 (five-on-three power-play), and 5:48 (four-on-four). Rankin now has 10 goals on the year for Rio.
Laredo would then come back and score three straight times to cut the Rio lead to 5-3 after two periods.
Mike Gooch got the Bucks on the board 6:19 into the period with a four-on-four goal, when he sent a laser slap shot from the left circle past Wylie Rogers to make it 5-1 Bees. The strike was Gooch's second of the year, with Jaye Judd (2), and Darryl Smith (19) picking up assists.
Erick Lizon would strike and make it 5-2 Bees with six minutes left the period, when he took the puck from the left side boards, and skated on the end line right in front of Rogers and jammed by his blocker.
With the Bucks on the power-play and time running out in the period, Lizon scored again to cut the Rio lead to 5-3. Lizon slipped past the Bees defense and scored on a break away past Rogers as the buzzer sounded to end the period.
Lizon now has four goals on the year.
Rio made it 6-3 with 1:14 left when Bicek scored an empty netter to seal it.
Gibb stopped 35 of 40 shots in net for the Bucks, while Rogers set aside 18 of 21 shots to pick up the win.
