MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, used stellar pitching from Cody Buckel and an absolute monster homerun by Josh Richmond for a 5-2 win over the Frederick Keys at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.
Buckel, making his last start prior to the all-star break, fired six innings of shutout, three hit ball. The three hits off the righty were all singles. Buckel also struck out five batters, bringing his league best total to 91, 21 better than second place Yordano Ventura of Wilmington. The outing earned Buckel his fifth win of the season.
On offense the Pelicans plated two runs in the fifth on a combination of four singles from Cookie Castillo, Santiago Chirino, Cafe Martinez, and Edwin Garcia. The Pelicans added another run in the sixth when Christian Villanueva scored on a groundout from Jake Skole. It was 3-0.
Myrtle Beach added to its total in the seventh, leading 3-2 at that point. Josh Richmond led off with a towering homerun, belted over the scoreboard in the left-center. The shot was light tower high on the way out and was Richmond's fifth of the season. Odubel Herrera finished off the night with an RBI single three batters later.
The Pelicans go for a series win over the Keys Wednesday at 7:05 with Randy Henry on the mound against Kyle Simon. It's another Wiener Wednesday, with $1 Hebrew National hotdogs all night long.
