June 30, 2009 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Des Moines Buccaneers News Release
URBANDALE, IA - The Des Moines Buccaneers announced today the hiring of veteran hockey player and former Iowa Stars head coach Dave Allison. Allison will step in as the Bucs Head Coach while former Buccaneer bench coach J.P. Parisé remains the organization's General Manager, and now, Director of Hockey Operations. Allison and Parisé will assume these roles officially on Wednesday.
Allison was the first and only coach of the Iowa Stars of the AHL. He brought immediate success to the organization by posting a 41-31-7 record and taking the team to the play-offs in their inaugural season. He compiled a 3-year 118-102 over-all record with the Stars. Allison's head coaching career started in 1989 with the Virginia Lancers of the ECHL. He's also held head coaching jobs in the AHL, OHL, and UHL, in addition to a stint as head coach of the NHL Ottawa Senators during the 1995-96 season.
Allison, a native of Fort Francis, Ontario, began his pro-career in 1975 with the Kenora Thistles. Over the next fourteen years he would play for, among others, the Cornwall Royals of the QMJHL, the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the IHL the Nova Scotia Voyageurs of the AHL, and the Montreal Canadians of the NHL. The Canadians signed Dave as a free agent in 1979 when the team was in the middle of winning four consecutive Stanley Cups. He spent the better part of six years with the farm team in Nova Scotia. Allison ended his playing career in the 1989, and in that same year accepted the head coaching position with the Virginia Lancer of the ECHL.
Allison is no stranger to Buccaneer Arena or Des Moines. He and his family have made Des Moines their home since he accepted the Stars position five years ago. Last season Dave spent much time at Buccaneer Arena as he was based in Des Moines while scouting for the NHL Colorado Avalanche. He has been involved with the Buccaneers' organization over the past several weeks as he assisted the Bucs coaching staff during the USHL Entry Drafts and the Buccaneers' Open and Invite Camps. He expressed his excitement of the opportunity to be the next Buccaneers head coach.
"The Des Moines Buccaneers have a long history of great coaches such as Bob Ferguson and Regg Simon; I'm excited to have this opportunity."
Allison went on to say that it wasn't all about hockey.
"At the end of the day it's a great fit for me and my family. We couldn't be happier. Buccaneers' hockey has been in the fabric of this community for a long time. This arena has always been a fun place for the fans, and we want to continue that while making it a difficult place for our opponents."
J.P. Parisé will remain General Manager of the organization while adding the Director of Hockey Operations to his plate. Parisé, who was instrumental in the hiring of Allison, expressed his excitement regarding the move.
"Dave is a proven winner. He comes to us with a great deal of experience and energy. I've watched him coach, and I see the positive impact he is having on these players. We're extremely fortunate to have him as our head coach."
