Bruins Thrash Wilderness 5-0
December 7, 2013 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Austin Bruins News Release
The biggest form of consistency for the first-place Austin Bruins (18-8-1) this season has been its play on home ice. Saturday night, Austin protected its house for the tenth time in as many games in a convincing 5-0 victory over the Minnesota Wilderness (17-5-4) at Riverside Arena.
The ice was slanted in the Bruins favor in the first period, as Austin played arguably its best period of hockey in quite some time. The Bruins outshot the Wilderness 12-4, and scored first, when Dominik Florian (Vlasim, Czech Republic) won a battle along the boards and rifled a wrist shot over the shoulder of Kasimir Kaskisuo (Vantaa, Finland) into the top shelf.
Minutes later, the Dion Antisin (Kelowna, BC) scored a power-play goal for the Bruins on a wrap-around. It was just the second power-play goal the Wilderness have allowed all season. In the final minute of the period, Florian won another corner battle and shot from a sharp angle. The rebound bounced out the Easton Viitala (Marquette, MI), who beat Kaskisuo from the slot.
Early in the second period, Luke Dietsch (St. Paul, MN) forced a Wilderness turnover near the crease and snuck the puck past the sprawling goaltender to make it 4-0 Bruins. The Wilderness, who were held without a first period scoring chance, had a few good ones in the middle frame, but Nick Lehr (Roseville, MN) came up big.
In a penalty-filled third period, Brennan Sanford (Holt, MI) notched his second goal of the weekend at even-strength, jamming away at his own rebound to make it 5-0. The Bruins penalty-kill was a perfect 10/10 in the game, while the power-play scored once in ten opportunities. Lehr stopped 18 saves for his fourth shutout of the season.
Next weekend, the Bruins have another home-and-home series with the Brookings Blizzard. Friday s game will be in Austin, as it is Military Night at Riverside Arena. It will be a night fans won t want to miss, and tickets are available at Games People Play, Hyvee and Walgreens in Austin, as well as the Bruins ticket office. Puck drop is at 7:05pm. Then Saturday, the Bruins travel to Brookings for a 7:05pm start. Both games will be on fasthockey.com, and on the radio in Austin on 1480AM KAUS.
