December 7, 2013 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Amarillo Bulls News Release
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, TX - Special teams have been one of the big keys to success of the Amarillo Bulls in the first quarter of the 2013-14 regular season. That area of the game proved to be the Bulls' downfall on Friday night.
The Bulls surrendered four power play goals, including three in the second period and dropped a 4-1 decision to the Lone Star Brahmas at NYTEX Center. It was the Bulls sixth regular season loss and for the first time since the NAHL Showcase they suffer back-to-back losses. The South Division lead the Bulls have enjoyed was reduced to six points after the Topeka RoadRunners and Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees were both victorious.
Cody Gylling scored the lone Bulls goal in the second period, while Collin Delia turned aside 20 of 24 shots to take the loss.
Even though both teams had ample scoring opportunities in the opening 20 minutes no pucks found the back of each net. The Brahmas outshot the Bulls 10-6.
Just before the midway mark of the middle stanza the Brahmas took a 1-0 lead thanks to a power play goal scored on a deflection in front. Nearly four minutes later the Bulls even when Cody Gylling scored at the side of the net from Mike Davis.
It was a wild last two minutes of play with Bulls Head Coach Dennis Williams being ejected from the game after arguing with the referee. The Brahmas scored two power play goals less than a minute apart to snap the 1-1 and take the lead for good. Amarillo outshot their opponents 12-10 in the period.
The action heated up in the third period with the Bulls applying pressure to goaltender TJ Black who made some big saves to preserve the lead. In the final two minutes the Bulls pulled their goaltender but couldn't get any closer. Lone Star rounded out the scoring with its fourth power play goal in the last 16 seconds. It was all Bulls in the third period, outshooting the Brahmas 9-4.
In the game the Bulls outshot the Brahmas 27-24. There were a total of 11 power plays with the Bulls going 1 for 4, while Lone Star was 4 for 7.
The Amarillo Bulls look to snap the two- game losing streak tomorrow (Saturday) night when they close out a two game set with the Brahmas at 7:30 pm at NYTEX Center.
